Craven Sailing Club Dinner and Presentation of Trophies – 21 March 2003
Craven Sailing Club , based at Embsay Reservoir, is back in course after the disruptions caused by Foot& Mouth. At the club’s annual dinner and presentation of trophies the Commodore, Barrie Jones, reported an increase in membership, a successful open day and a well supported calendar of races.
The club was very pleased to welcome Peter Marshall OBE as guest speaker. Before presenting the prizes Peter described some of his own sailing experiences and his charitable work, which included organizing the Craven Trust – Dales Recovery Appeal.
The overall Club Championship was won again by Ian Kennedy and details of this and other prize winners are given below. Anyone interested in the club’s activities, facilities or membership should contact Barrie Jones on Tel 01756 794337.

At last, a chance for all those sailors who don’t get excited by chasing other around a racing course! Lots of families turned upon this sunny Saturday to picnic and participate in the loosely org anised events.
The results of the great waterborne tennis ball chase were:
James Moreman 8 Stephen Smith 6 Ben Lister Disqualified for being too good Callum 4 Andrew Enzor 4
The adults v kids relay race was inevitably won by the kids (just) – congratulations to Andrew, James and Stephen.
The ‘British Bulldog’ game, undertaken in increasingly windy conditions lead to some high speed chasing, with Stephen Smith coming out as the last person to be caught (after some narrow escapes early on).
The capsize prize and backward sailing prize were both convincingly won by Jon Moreman.
Thanks to the organisers – Chris Enzor, Barrie Jones (oops, didn’t mean to take the granddaughters for a swim!) and Ian Smith. Thanks also to Dave Patchett for his busy time on rescue boat duty!
Like Ducks to Water Embsay Splash
To many new to sailing, racing seems full of mysterious rules, coded cries of "starboard", "water", and odd hand gestures! Despite frequent invitations to 'have a go' from the experienced helms at Embsay, like many others, I was concerned about causing havoc - and so leapt at the chance of the Thursday night series of instruction, advice and racing.
Taking nothing for granted, patient coach Harry Jackson began with the differences between port and starboard before the whiteboard gradually filled up with diagrams of increasing complexity. Despite being dismayed to find that our boats didn't have whiteboards, the fleet of twelve took to the water and completed two races without anyone getting lost or an appeal committee having to be formed. Leading (and giving the rest of us an idea of where to go) were Nick Wright and Terry Pressdee.
The confidence gained in week one took a blow on arrival at the reservoir for week two to find the wind howling across the water. Anxious glances through the windows of the clubhouse during the briefing showed gathering waves (think 'The Cruel Sea', 'Perfect Storm' etc). Despite asking as many questions as we could to the patient and experienced Ian Smith, the time eventually came when someone had to venture onto the water. It seemed a good time to remember a previous commitment…
Nick Wright and Tim Hiley impressed us all by actually completing the course, with Nick managing to win both the event and the 'Most Capsizes in a Race' competition (12). The other three competitors who didn't quite make the start-line had…interesting voyages, and are happy to describe their experiences to anyone who will listen. The excellent supervision and advice from Barry Jones in the rescue boat was most reassuring!
Week three, and the class of fifteen boats benefited from the eloquence and wisdom of Ben Lister. To our surprise we actually found ourselves answering questions on rights of way and it began to dawn on us that we were beginning to get a grasp of the basic rules. Two exciting races followed, marked by obvious improvements in skill and confidence from the newcomers who were inspired by the more experienced crews who battled out the places ahead of us, with Natasha Lister crewed by Jonathan taking the honours.
Afterwards, back in the clubhouse, results were announced along with some special prizes for unique individual talents! So, congratulations to Nick - the overall winner and huge thanks to 'instructors', rescue boat crews and all those who came along and offered support and advice on the nights. I'm sure there'll be a few more racers joining in at Embsay this season.
Craven Sailing Club certainly lived up to its reputation of a friendly club that encourages sailing at all levels.

ULLSWATER - JUNE 20TH-22ND
My weekend started off totally different to how I planned. I was to arrive home from work at 8.15am on Friday morning & set off to Helmsley to a Bike Rally. The bike was packed with tent, stove etc. but when I came to start it, one of the ignition coils blew."Weekend thwarted", I thought. Sheila wasn't so glum, fortunately, & remembered about the sailing & camping weekend at Ullswater & had the foresight to have taken the Campsite number..... Great!!! Weekend back on!
We unpacked the bike & flung everything into the car & set off after I had a kip, arriving at the Campsite about 4pm.I was beginning to wonder if I'd got the right site when, about 8pm onwards, others began to file in. The family "Stretch", Jon & Jimmy Moreman, Ian Kennedy & Lynn, Ian, Julie & Stephen Smith, Neil Makin & daughters & early Saturday, Harry Jackson. Neil actually did end up in the wrong Campsite but pleaded insanity & got a refund!
Now, because I was 'sans bateau', as it were (no towbar), I had kind offers from all quarters & so had a sail in a Topper (cheers Jimmy), Solo (Jon), Laser (Neil) & Albacore (Harry).
The wind was variable throughout the weekend & it was good watching the racing further down the lake on Sunday. The International Canoes & 29ers were howling along. Ullswater is probably my favourite of all the Lakes & I enjoyed sailing on it again. I did a morning course there last August & borrowed a Topaz for the afternoon, the reason I ended up buying one.
Everybody had a great time & I for one will want to return before the Autumn .....................must get a towbar on!!
Cheers for now,
