Craven Sailing Club Championship-2003
With lots of new members joining over the last few years Craven Sailing Club (CSC) has had a great turnout for the Club Championship with 28 competitors and 16 different boat classes.
This years winner is Terry Pressdee who joined CSC only 3 years ago with his wife Caroline and started sailing in a Graduate with plenty of help and advice from many of the members at CSC. Terry bought a single-handed Laser which has made all the difference. Though not quite on the winning streak, he has managed to sail all season with an average position of 3rd place.
Runner up spot went to Jonathan and Natasha Lister sailing an RS 200. Having won 16 out of the 18 races they sailed they proved to be a match for anybody but holiday and other commitments meant they missed out.
3rd place went to Eric Stringer and Alan Grange in the Albacore. They also sailed all the races this season and with only 1 non-finish they had a great season.

Bonfire Trophy - November 2, 2003
An excellent turnout of 16 boats competed for Craven Sailing Clubs Bonfire trophy in a blustery westerly breeze.
Terry Pressdee in his Laser managed to win the first race by a tiny margin over Jonathan and Natasha Lister in their RS200, with Ian and Stephen Smith leading the race on the water but finishing 3rd on handicap in their Buzz. Nick Wright showed impressive bursts of speed in his Laser, but was slowed by a number of spectacular swims.
The second race was more breezy and saw Ian and Stephen Smith go for an extensive swim, while Club Treasurer Chris Enzor broke his rudder and had to be towed home. Jonathan and Natasha Lister won the race, beating Martin Barrett in his Vareo into second place, with Terry Pressdee finishing third.
The breeze stayed up for the third race. Jonathan and Natasha made no mistakes, again beating Martin Barrett and Ian Smith. Terry Pressdee meanwhile had swapped to helming Alistair Cass's Laser 2, but although he was first to the windward mark, the combined weight of Alistair and Terry was too great to maintain winning boat speed downwind.
Overall Jonathan and Natasha Lister were first, Martin Barrett was second, Terry Pressdee third, Ian and Stephen Smith 4th, with Tim Hiley coming in 5th having sailed consistently well in his Topper throughout the very changeable conditions. Special mention goes to Jon Moreman for persevering as he struggled to get to grips with his new Laser, and to Andrew Enzor and James Moreman who showed many of the adults the way round the course.
Thanks to Kevin Barrett for running the racing and to Dave Allison for providing plenty of rescue services.
Our commodore, Barrie Jones, was sorely missed and everyone at the prize giving wished him a speedy recovery from his recent illness.
Personal Handicap Trophy
Another innovation this season has been the introduction of a Personal Handicap system. It was based on performance in a minimum of 10 races out of the Spring, Summer and Autumn Tuesday series, best AVERAGE placing taking all races into account. There were 37 participants but only 13 qualified for consideration. A new trophy has been provided.
Well done Jon!

Craven Sailing Club Summer Trophy 27 July 03
A new format of five shorter races was tried for the first time, rather than three longer ones. This put emphasis on good starting. The day started with a light Westerly Force 2, with Martin Barrett in his Vareo taking an early lead. As the conditions freshened to Force 4 Barrie Jones in his Streaker proved unstoppable, except during a pre-race collision with Alistair Cass’s Laser 2!
Congratulations to Barrie Jones, and many thanks for the professional organisation of the racing by Ben Lister and Ceri Shave.
In addition to prizes for the top four, a number of special prizes were awarded:
Howard Winfield and Ian Morrison – the ‘snorkel prize’ for consistent sailing at periscope depth
Alistair Cass – the ‘taboo prize’ for colliding with the Commodore.
Neil Makin – the ‘figurehead prize’ for sailing with his daughter Anna perched on the bow (although, following a swim, the figurehead refused to participate in the afternoon).
…and rather more seriously, Jenny Thirkettle – first lady.

Post Event clarifications. Howard and Ian were, in fact, undertaking scientific research, all to do with the hydrodynamics of submerged vessels. The periscope has now been removed and normal sailing will resume in September.
Alistair has denied accusations that he had been paid to assassinate the Commodore by disaffected members who regard the allocated PY for the Streaker as plainly ridiculous.
Craven Sailing Club Sunday Summer Series 2003
With an excellent turn out of boats, this was a long fought series over 8 races. Congratulations to Jonathan and Natasha for their convincing win. Commiserations to Jon Moreman who was beaten, by one point, by his son James. The Laser fleet showed the benefit of practicing as Terry Pressdee and Nick Wright are now getting very close to local expert Ian Kennedy. The overall results were as follows.
